inspo: ai yazawa

I've been wanting to write about my favourite artists and media, all things that inspire me for this project. This post is dedicated to my favourite mangaka: Ai Yazawa.

Hoping I can get a copy of Last Quartet >.<

I discovered her back in 2018-ish(?), accidentally after scrolling through anime edit twitter. I watched Nana and fell in love with her storytelling and style. I read Paradise Kiss and liked it so much. It has a raw honesty that touched me (Yukari is relatable in some sense). I love how flawed and humane the characters were as they grow from mistakes and harsh realities of being in a relationship.

They look so cool!

Fashion is very prominent in her works and every character has their own unique style. Grunge, punk for Nana Osaki; soft, feminine for Nana Komatsu; flamboyant, cool for George Koizumi. It makes me want to create my own style for this project as well. Ai Yazawa exposed me to the Japan alt-fashion scene. There are so many niche like gothic, lolita, visual kei, decora, all so unique and interesting to dive into. She is one of my inspiration and I'm glad that I start this creative path for myself.
